Botha Defeats Guerrero

Last Friday, February 6th, 2009, Francois Botha scored a unanimous 12 rounds points decision over Ron Guerrero to claimi the vacant and lightly regarded WBF heavyweight championship. The fight happened at the Tlokwe Hall in Potchefstroom, and the scores read 118-114, 117-111 and 117-110 all for Botha.

The fight was pretty slow, with the referee having to break up the fighters continuously throughout the bout for holding. The biggest moment of the fight happened in round 11 when Botha landed an overhand right that had Guerroro in trouble, but Botha was unable to follow up to finish.

With this fight Botha, now 40, improves his record to 47-4-2, with 28 ko's, while the 34 year old Guerror has his record from to 20-16-3 with 14 KO's.

I honestly don't see Botha going much further than this level of competition at this stage of his career. It would be a good note for Botha to go out on, because although the WBF belt isn't from a major organization, he could at least say he came back after a long break and won a heavyweight championship and get out on top. That would be a pretty good story to tell anyone. Good luck to Botha on what he decides to do next.
