Haye Says He Will Beat Wladimir Easily

In this video David Haye talks about his potential upcoming fight with Wladimir Klitschko and discusses how he has studied Wladimir for quite some time and believes he knows how to not only beat him but defeat him easily. Here's the video...

Bunce Talks About Klitschko Haye Venue

In this video Steve Bunce discusses rumors about where the fight that's close to being signed between Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye will take place. He believes it's a good possibility that it will be in Berlin, Germany.

Chambers Decisions Peter

On Friday night IBF #3 ranked "Fast" Eddie Chambers(34-1, 18 KOs) won a 12 round majority decision over the former WBC ex champion Samuel Peter(30-3, 23 KOs) at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. This was Peter's 1st fight since losing his belt to Vitali Klitschko.

In the fight Chambers was alot quicker than the career high 265 lb Peter, but did not engage much while on the inside.

I think this is the end of Peter. If he is unwilling to get himself into the shape he needs to be competitive at his age while being fairly young he never will, and even if he does he's not going to be any better than he is now in his prime years.

As for Chambers this is a good name for his record and a solid win. Look for him to be in title contention soon.

Klitschko vs Haye Almost A Done Deal

It appears that the fight between current WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko(52-3, 46 KOs) and former cruiserweight champion turned heavyweight David Haye(22-1, 22 KOs) is almost set for the planned date of June 20th. The contract has not been signed yet, but it appears that it is very likely it will be signed soon in the next couple days according to representatives of Wladimir Klitschko who contacted fightnews.

There is also a potential match up with his big brother and WBC champion Vitali Klitschko(37-2, 36 KOs)and Chris Arreola(26-0, 23 KOs) who was originally set to face Wladimir if the Haye talks did not work out. However, Arreola has to get past his scheduled fight with Jameel McCline(39-9, 23 KOs) first on April 11th.

WBC Declares Vitali Klitschko Greatest Puncher

From a official statement from the WBC organization today, Vitali Klitschko is declared by them as the greatest puncher ever in the heavyweight division with his knockout percentage now a high 97.2%! They also say he is the best pound for pound! Here is the official WBC statement:

“[Vitali] Klitschko proved that he is the best fighter in the world nowadays, pound for pound, after defeating Juan Carlos Gomez who had a record of 35 knockouts in 44 wins and only 1 loss. Klitschko has outdone all other fighters, no matter what division they belong to. The heavyweight world champion is the only one who can claim he is the greatest champion in the world of boxing as nobody can defeat him. With Vitali´s extraordinary wins, in fights that have been stunning to world fans, showing absolute control and power, our king of the heavyweights has silenced many mouths and media that had unfairly attacked him without any evidence, and been disrespectful to him, considering the great class he is showing. Jose Sulaiman, president of our organization, stated today that Klitschko is the pride the WBC as well as he is the pride of world boxing. Vitlai Klitschko’s record is now: 37 wins; 36 of them by knockout, and including his last win by KO, his percentage in this specialty went up to 97.2%, fact after which Klitschko is placed as the greatest puncher ever in the heavyweight division.”

Vitali Klitschko Interview After Gomez

After retaining his WBC heavyweight championship belt last Saturday night against Juan Carlos Gomez, Vitali Klitschko was interviewed and talked about his satisfaction with his fight and his brother Wladimir working on getting the fight with David Haye finalized, which appears to be imminent in being done.

Klitshcko's manager Bernd Bonte. was also interviewed and he said that details of the fight with Haye should be done this week, but the fight is not going to happen in the UK. Most likely the fight will take place in Germany.

Thompson TKO's Serin

Former WBO #1 mandatory Tony "The Tiger" Thompson(32-3, 21 KOs), who fought and lost to the WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last year, fought on the undercard of Klitschko vs Gomez Saturday night and defeated Adnan Serin (19-10-1) via 5th round TKO.

Thompson also acted as a sparring partner for Vitali Klitschko ahead of his fight with Gomez.

Byrd TKO's Sandow

Former 2 time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd(41-5-1, 22 KOs), who fought both Wladimr(twice in a losing effort) and Vitali Klitschko(defeated Vitali when he retired on his stool due to a shoulder injury)in championship fights, won his 1st fight at cruiserweight on the undercard of Klitschko vs. Gomez Saturday night against Matthias Sandow (4-4) via 4th round TKO.

It's interesting to note that Byrd acted as a sparring partner for Vitali Klitschko ahead of his championship fight with Gomez.

Atlas Impressed By Vitali Klitschko

In this video boxing analyst and commentator Teddy Atlas talks about the current WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, his performance last night against the WBC #1 mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez, and how he is impressed with Vitali despite his long layoff and not being too impressed with the landscape of the heavyweight division.

*final round Klitschko gets strange warning/deduction maybe and floors Gomez once before Vitali Klitschko finishes via TKO!

Klitschko Defeats Gomez

Tonights WBC heavyweight championship fight between current WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and # 1 WBC contender Juan Carlos Gomez started off with Vitali feeling out his opponent and Gomez' speed giving Vitali some issues, but after awhile he adjusted and started to come on in the later rounds landing some good right crosses.

In round 5 Gomez got a cut over his right eye from a Klitshcko punch, and in round 6 Klitschko got a cut around the hairline from a headbutt by Gomez.

At the end of round 7 Gomez was hurt and went down with a strong right, but Klitschko could not finish him. In round 8 Vitali put more pressure on Gomez and hurt him and dominated, but Vitali was unable to follow up to finish him although the could have been waived off because at one point Gomez turned his back as Klitschko was punishing him.

In round 9, Vitali got warned for something I'm still not sure about and was deducted points(I believe it may have been what the ref saw as a headbutt? I didn't see it, and I'm not a 100% on whether he was deducted points but it looks like he was), and immediately after followed up with a barrage of punches and Gomez was hurt and he went down again. After he got up, Vitali pursued him again and hurt him until the ref called it off. So Vitali Klitschko remains the WBC heavyweight champion via 9th round TKO. The 9th round is what I predicted for the fight to end.

In my opinion, this was a very good fight with Gomez actually coming to fight and trade shots with Vitali. Gomez is really fast and I don't see too many other fighters other than the Klitschko's beating Gomez in the heavyweight division. I think Gomez would beat Haye, and Povetkin, but most likely lost to Dimitrenko and Arreola would be a toss up.

So Vitali improves his record to 37(35 KO's)-2(2 KO's)-0 while Gomez falls to 44(35 KO's)-2(2 KO's)-0. Vitali is scheduled to face another mandatory, Oleg Maskaev, in a very short time. Stay tuned for more information here.

Klitschko vs Gomez Full Fight Card

At Stuttgart, Germany (ESPN Classic live at 6 p.m. ET / taped replay on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. ET and check out Where To Watch Klitschko vs. Gomez for alternatives): Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez, 12 rounds, for Klitschko's WBC heavyweight title; Alexander Ustinov vs. Danny Batchelder, 8 rounds, heavyweights; Tony Thompson vs. Adnan Serin, 10 rounds, heavyweights; Chris Byrd vs. Mathias Sandow, 8 rounds, cruiserweights; Fatjon Murati vs. Steve Kroekel, 6 rounds, light heavyweights; Gabor Veto vs. Perparim Hajdini, 4 rounds, junior lightweights; Kira Schuerer vs. Mariel Faber, 4 rounds, female featherweights; Nathan James vs. Michael Matysik, 4 rounds, heavyweights

Interesting to note that Chris Byrd, who tried moving down to light heavyweight but found the weight drain being too significant to compete, will try his hand at cruiserweight in this undercard.

Chris Byrd fought both Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. All fights were championship fights and Wladimir beat him twice and Vitali suffered a loss to him when he had to retire on his stool due to a shoulder injury despite being ahead on all judges scorecards.

He was used as a sparring partner for Vitali in preparations for his fight with Gomez along with Tony "The Tiger" Thompson who was the #1 ranked WBO contender last year until Vitali's brother Wladimir fought him and beat him. Tony Thompson will also be fighting on this card.

The bad news is that it appears that ESPN Classic will not be showing the under card for the Klitschko vs. Gomez fight. Possibly a live stream will allow you to show more. So check out Where To Watch Klitschko vs. Gomez for more information on alternatives.

Ring Fixed For Klitschko Gomez

There was an issue with the ring being 4 feet too small for Saturday's WBC heavyweight championship fight between current WBC champ Vitali Klitshko and WBC # 1 mandatory Juan Carlos Gomez, but this issue has been fixed.

ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner had the following to say:

“The fight is on! I have been at the venue personally. The Klitschko management group and K2 promotions are still young companies and mistakes do happen. As we are confident that Juan will beat Vitali we definitely want this fight to happen; after years of boredom we want the world to see a great heavyweight champion again. So we helped them to work out a solution for the ring. Everything is set now and ready to go.”

I would like to hear the Klitschko team response to some of these verbal jabs by Öner. I don't think the ring size was anything done on purpose and I'm sure there's a better explanation on what happened other than the Klitschko team being nervous or stupid as Öner was quoted as saying previously.

Source

Ring Size Issue Could Mean No Klitschko Gomez Fight

There is less than 24 hours to go before the WBC heavyweight championship between the current WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and the WBC #1 mandatory Juan Carlos Gomez, the Gomez team is threatening to pull out of the fight due to a error with the ring size. The ring is reported to be 4 feet less than it is supposed to be under WBC regulations for championship bouts. ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner had the following to say:

“This is ridiculous! I really don’t understand how a promoter can be so arrogant and ignorant not to follow the rules and build a ring that is almost 4 feet too small. We are not talking about a few inches here!”

“In fight week we have been confronted with all kinds of provocation and unprofessional behaviour by the Klitschko management – for instance they still refuse credentials for my closest office staff and parts of Gomez’ team – but that caps it all! Team Klitschko is either very stupid or very nervous. I have no other explanations for their mistakes. They have been talking a lot about using the smallest possible ring but obviously never even checked the rules. It is nothing but embarrassing – after all we are not talking about a small fight just for fun. This is a world title fight. The world is watching and the Klitschko's have nothing to do but to humiliate themselves.”

After the problem was addressed the ring ropes were adjusted but leaving only 12 inches of space. Öner had the following to say about that:

“Now the space between the ropes and the canvas is only 12 inches instead of 36 inches! This is extremely risky and dangerous. If a fighter stands against the ropes he might easily slip and fall. In the worst case one of the guys could break his legs. And we do not want this to happen to either Vitali or Juan. So we will not allow our fighter to step into this ring!”

The question is can this problem be solved before fight time?

“Well, team Klitschko still got enough time to sort things out and set up a new ring. I hope they are working on this already. We will measure again tomorrow morning and hope that the fight can still go on. Juan is ready to go – and he doesn’t care about the ring size. He said he would even outbox Vitali in a phone booth. But the rules are the rules. We will not disrespect the WBC and we will not allow the Klitschko management to do so.”

I don't think this was done intentionally. Clearly a mistake and I think Öner was a little premature on his verbal attacks towards team Klitschko. Hopefully this problem is fixed soon so we can have the fight!

Klitschko Gomez Prediction

With the fight coming up shortly this Saturday, March 21st, I thought I'd share real quick my thoughts and predict how this fight will turn out.

I see Gomez coming in and sticking to a game plan where he constantly moves and picks his shots. I see Vitali starting off maybe a little more aggressive than normal, but find it a little hard to land and backing off a bit and sticking with his jab mainly for the 1st few rounds. I believe the energy of a high level professional championship fight, and an already taxing style Gomez is going to use to have a chance against Vitali will cause Gomez to start wearing down faster than his training would have made him believe. This will cause Vitali to start landing more and I expect the fight to go about 9 rounds before a TKO stoppage win for Vitali Klitschko. There is no way Gomez will hurt Vitali with his fists. There is no possibilty that Gomez will knockout Vitali or even cause a TKO stoppage.

The only way I see Gomez winning this fight is if Vitali somehow injures himself over extending his arm to try to hit Gomez. I think if Vitali takes time to warm up before coming out to the fight and feeling out Gomez for a couple rounds this won't happen. There's also a very small chance that Gomez could be in such tremendous shape he can run the whole fight and squeeze out a small decision victory, but the likelihood of that happening is far less in my opinion than Vitali winning on points(in other words even if Gomez comes in top shape and selects his shots and runs I think Vitali will still beat him on points), which I don't think will happen either.

Vitali by TKO stoppage 9th round is my prediction. What's yours?

Gomez' Trainer Cuellar Interview

Ahead of the WBC heavyweight championship fight between current WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and WBC #1 mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez, Gomez' trainer Orlando Cuellar talks about how he believes his training methods will succeed come Saturday night.

Klitschko vs Gomez Now On ESPN Classic

Important Update:

This Saturday, March 21st's WBC heavyweight title fight between Vitali Klitschko and Juan Carlos Gomez has been changed from the regular ESPN network and will now be showing on ESPN Classic live at 6PM ET/ 3PM PT. The bout will be also be replaying again at 7PM Eastern on ESPN2.

So, ESPN Classic at 6PM ET/3PM PT, and not regular ESPN.

Why was the Klitschko/Gomez fight moved to ESPN classic on such short notice?
An ESPN spokesman said that the time of the fight was moved back an hour and that ESPN put the fight on Classic to keep Klitschko-Gomez from conflicting with the already scheduled NCAA wrestling finals.

If this means you won't get to watch Klitschko vs. Gomez because you don't have ESPN classic, I have information on live feeds of the fight on the post Where To Watch Klitschko vs. Gomez.

Gomez vs McCall

Ahead of the March 21st WBC heavyweight championship between the WBC #1 contender Juan Carlos Gomez and the WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitshcko, I thought it would be appropriate to show a couple of Gomez' last heavyweight fights. This fight against Oliver McCall was for the WBC International heavyweight title and was also a WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator and took place on August 19th, 2007. This isn't the 1st time they had fought. They fought back in 2005, but the fight was ruled a no contest. Here's the fight:

Arreola vs Mccline On April 11th

It's just been announced today by Goossen Tutor Promotions via a press conference at the Sisley Italian Restaurant in Sherman Oaks, CA. that Cristobal “The Nightmare” Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs) will take on four-time world title challenger Jameel “Big Time” McCline (39-9-3, 23KO’s) for Arreola's WBC Continental Americas and NABF heavyweight title on April 11th. McCline couldn't make it to the press conference but had the following to say via e-mail:

McCline Quotes

“I planned on attending today, but my new trainer Stacey McKinley and I discussed it over this past weekend and decided that I could not afford to lose the training time by flying from South Florida to Los Angeles.”

“Chris Arreola is not missing any gym time by doing a press conference in his hometown. I, on the other hand, would have missed two to three days for a match that is under a month away.”

“I’ve been around long enough to know that training is essential and I’m really enjoying my new trainer right now. I have what it takes to win this fight, but you only get so many opportunities in this game. I want to give myself the best chance to win by training every day I can.

“I apologize to Dan Goossen and all the media in Los Angeles but I will catch up with everyone during fight week in Las Vegas when I will be fully prepared to take on Chris Arreola on April 11.”

Here are some other quotes from other parties at the conference..

Dan Goosen Quotes

“I was sick and had a few personal problems that caused the re-scheduling of the original press conference. We’re here today to make it clear there’s no heavyweight that will beat Arreola, not even Klitschko.”

Arreola Quotes

“I respect that he couldn’t make it due to training. I know he wants to take my ‘0′ away, but he’s wrong. I will send him to retirement before anything.”

“I am in a different level now. I realize I was out of shape when I got on my knee against Travis Walker. I realize this is no joke, its time to play the part of a professional athlete.”

**Talks about not going back to Big Bear to train here...

“I hated Big Bear and that is why I am working my butt off. It feels good to train in my backyard. Floyd Mayweather parties in Las Vegas and trains in Las Vegas why can’t I do that? It’s my comfort zone for me.”

“Thanks to my electrifying trainer. Who keeps me on the track, we’re currently sparring 3 minute rounds with 30 second rest. I am 260 right now, but come fight night I will be 240.”

“I’m going to win impressively, remember that! Because when I win I want people to say he earned it.”

The fight once again will be on April 11th at the Mandalay Bay.

Source

Ok so the good news is that we have a great fight coming up-- Arreola vs. McCline sounds like a terrific matchup, but the bad news is Arreola was a potential name for Wladimir to fight. With negotiations not looking so good between Wladimir and Haye, who will Wladimir pick for an opponent? Dimitrenko and Povetkin have been thrown around before as potentials, but they have both talked about potentially fighting each other. In my opinion if Haye breaks down look for Wladimir to fight Povetkin or Dimitrenko next.

Gomez' Fitness Coach Predicts Decision Win

# 1 WBC mandatory challenger's fitness and conditioning coach Mo Klatten says that Gomez' training went very well and they focused mainly only on conditioning and speed and he expects a decision win for Gomez. This is what Mr. Klatten had to say..

“We know that we’ve done our job very well."

“Juan didn’t miss one single session and has always been on time. He did everything I asked him to. I have never seen a fighter – especially a Cuben fighter – as disciplined and focused.”

“Juan got what it takes and after all the work we’ve done he will be able to go 12 rounds at extremely high speed. For the Virchis fight we did a lot of strength training. This time we put more emphasis on conditioning and speed. Vitali will be surprised at what is coming towards him. When it comes to technique and speed Juan is the best heavyweight boxer in the world today. We know that Vitali is fast as well though he has lost some speed over the years. Also Vitali is definitely stronger than Juan and punches very hard. But Juan knows that and will be aware that Vitali doesn’t hit him. From what I’ve seen in training I call it a decision win for Gomez..”

Klitschko Gomez Final Presser

Today in Stuttgart, Germany was the final press conference for the upcoming WBC heavyweight championship on Saturday, March 21st between current WBC champion "Dr. Ironfist" Vitali Klitschko and WBC #1 mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez.

Both fighters promised to be victorious with Gomez stating he had the hardest/best training camp of his career and doesn't care if Vitali had a good camp or not that he was going to win. Vitali promised the hardest fight for Gomez of his career and also promises to win. Here are some quotes..

Gomez Quotes

“Vitali claims everywhere that he will knock me out, so why does he even care about the judges? To me, it completely makes no difference who is in the ring. I invite ‘Dr. Sissy’ to bring it, so I can outbox him and there will be no two opinions about the decision. On Saturday the ‘Black Panther’ will again be a world champion."

"I will beat his face in. I am the better boxer. I will beat him, that's it."

Klitschko Quotes

"I am ready. I am confident. I had no injuries in training camp, thank God, and I am 100 percent ready. I heard a lot of statement from Gomez's camp recently and all I can say is that they can dream on, they are all dreams."

"He says he has had the hardest training camp of his career and I can promise him the hardest fight of his life. I think he is a very good boxer, with technical skill, and he showed it all in the cruiserweight. But heavyweight is something else. I will show him. It will be a lesson, but it won't last long."

Teddy Atlas Previews Klitschko Gomez

Ahead of the March 21st fight between current WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and WBC #1 challenger Juan Carlos Gomez, ESPN's Teddy Atlas gives his take on the fight, the heavyweight landscape, and more!

Think Atlas was a bit harsh on the heavyweight scene. I think it has more to do with boxing politics than there being limited talent at heavyweight. I also think that the Eastern bloc fighters don't get a fair exposure in the west as they would if the same talent were to have came from the west thus giving it the illusion that there is less talent than there really is.

Rogan Interested In Fighting Haye

Prizefighter tournament winner and conqueror of former Olympic medalist Audley Harrison and heavyweight contender Matt Skelton, Martin Rogan thinks that he is the man who would be willing to take on David Haye since he would have no problem fighting him and fighting him in Britain instead of Haye waiting on the Klitschko's. Here's what Rogan had to say...

Rogan On Skelton

"Skelton was just the latest step on my amazing journey."

"Skelton had been in with world champions and survived but I took him out. I have the chance now to build on this crazy fairytale and get a world title fight but I am sure there is room for Haye.

Rogan On The World Champions

"There are three world champions at the moment and I'm sure one of them will fancy a fight against a novice former taxi driver."

Rogan On Winning the Prizefighter Tournament

"Winning Prizefighter changed everything for me overnight and then last summer there was a chance to fight Harrison and I jumped at it and when it was postponed I pushed again for it to happen."

Rogan On Haye

"I know that Haye is struggling to get either of the Klitschko brothers Wladimir and Vitali in the ring."

"Well, he can have a bit of me if he wants it and he won't have to go to Germany for a fight."

"David Haye and his team have until Saturday the 21st to see sense and agree terms," said a spokesman for Klitschko's promotional company K2.

"Haye is ranked inside the top five by everybody and people are raving about how dangerous he is."

"I'm a big grown man and believe me when I say that nobody is too dangerous to share a ring with.

"I'm serious when I say that I will fight Haye and if you look back at one year ago there is no way that anybody in their right mind could have predicted that I would beat Olympic champion Harrison and Commonwealth champion Skelton."

"People that know me know that I never let things slip away and that is how I will be chasing the World heavyweight title.

"If a fight with Haye can be made then I would agree it in a second because boxing is a sport that demands immediate action.

"Any hanging around and the opportunity could be lost."

Klitschko Gives Haye Till March 21st

Wladimir "Steelhammer" Klitschko has given a definite deadline to David "Hayemaker" Haye in regards to coming to an agreement for a fight between them, and that deadline is March 21st. If matters can not be settled between the 2 fighters sides before that date Wladimir said he will look elsewhere for a fight including a potential fight with Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola or #1 ranked IBF contender Alexander Povetkin.

Wladimir Klitschko Quotes

"I think the fight with Haye will still happen, although talks have not been able to move. We are at the same point that we were before. We have a specific [deadline] date of March 21, and if Haye refuses then we will consider Chris Arreola or Alexander Povetkin. We still have time."

Sam Peter Apologizes About Klitschko Performance

Ahead of his fight on March 27th with top American prospect "Fast" Eddie Chambers, former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter had a few words to his fans and fellow Nigerians regarding his poor performance and his plans for the future. This is what he had to say:

“I still feel bad about my loss to Klitschko and I know how Nigerians feel. I apologise to all and want to say I am now on my way back. I also want to promise, other things being equal, and by the grace of God, to retrieve the title.

I have always believed that it is never the fall of a man that defines his greatness in life, but how many times he rises to trudge on and then conquer the adversaries that put him down in the first place.

In going for it afresh, I will need the moral backing of all my fellow countrymen. I want all Nigerians to forgive me and support me in my fresh new quest.

Fighting Chambers is a new opportunity to correct my mistakes. I will use the fight to climb back and I promise that I will not let it slip by. I beg Nigerians and indeed all Africans to forgive me and lend their support to me. In no time, I will rule the world again and return to being the fearful Samuel Peter that was feared and respected in the boxing world, so much he was nicknamed ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’.”

Chambers had a few words of his own before the upcoming match..

“This is the opportunity that I have been waiting. It is unfortunate that people do not reckon with me as a great fighter in this game. I don’t think I have been getting the respect that I deserve. But all that will change soon and it will after I have dealt with Peter.

I hate his ring name, ‘Nightmare’. Night-what? He is not anybody’s nightmare, definitely not my own. In fact, I’m set to become the nightmare of his career.”

V. Klitschko Interview Ahead Of Gomez Fight

This is a recent interview with current WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko speaking with Eurosport ahead of his fight on March 21st against WBC #1 ranked contender Juan Carlos Gomez.

How are you preparing for the fight against Cuban boxer Juan Carlos Gomez on March 21 in Stuttgart?

I've been at a training camp in the Austrian town of Going - in the Tyrol - with my coach Fritz Sdunek, where I've started with my fitness training. At the moment I'm doing a lot of sparring and working on my quickness and defence. I've also been going swimming and playing a bit of table tennis.

Why are you based in Going?

In the last few years I've prepared for a lot of fights in Going, and I feel very good here. I've got really used to the atmosphere and the hotel, which is very important. There are ideal training conditions in the Stanglwirt Hotel, so there's no reason for me to change training camps.

You are 37 and have overcome numerous severe injuries. Is your body still able to cope with this stress? Are you feeling your age catching up with you?

No - I am absolutely fit and feel very good. The preparations for the fight are perfectly on plan. I can't wait to get in the ring to fight Juan Carlos.

Your next opponent is a familiar one for you as you once knocked him out while sparring together, and your coach Fritz Sdunek used to train him so he knows all about his weaknesses. Does that mean there's no way that anything could go wrong?

Absolutely right, I already know Juan Carlos Gomez. But then again, that was some time ago and since then he's improved a lot. He's become number one in the WBC ranking and is anything but an easy opponent. He's experienced, quick and unpleasant. I definitely won't underestimate him.

You've never been knocked out during your career and have only had to retire twice because of injuries. Are you ever afraid of being hurt by a lucky punch?

In a title fight anything can happen. You always have to be fully focused and can't afford even a moment of weakness. Any fighter can land a lucky punch: they are all professionals.

How important is mental strength?

It's very important. You have to know your strengths and be able to rely on them and simply believing that you will win the fight gives you a big advantage before the bell goes for the first round.

Would you have preferred to fight David Haye or Nikolai Valuev?

It's no secret that I wanted to fight another opponent, but the association has insisted that I fight against Gomez first. I've got to concentrate fully on this fight.

The heavyweight division is dominated by the Klitschko brothers. Are there any other boxers out there for the pair of you to fear?

A Klitschko doesn't need to fear anyone.... but there are heavyweight boxers out there who are very strong. They are Haye, Valuev, Ruslan Chagaev and Chris Arreola.

How important is it to have your brother Vladimir around you when you're in the ring?

It's enormously important that he supports me. When I'm fighting I only hear two voices: his, and that of my coach. I can't imagine fighting without him around.

What will you do if you lose against Gomez? Will you retire from boxing?

I will not lose!

Povetkin and Dimitrenko Could Fight

It's been recently reported that #1 IBF heavyweight challenger Alexander Povetkin (16-0, 12 KOs) and #1 WBO heavyweight challenger Alexander Dimitrenko (29-0, 19 KOs) could face each other to see who is the best challenger for the WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir "Steelhammer" Klitschko and for the vacant EBU heavyweight title.

Dimitrenko has given a response to fightnews.com in regards to this potential fight:

“I know Povetkin from when we were in amateur boxing. We often acted as sparring partners in the ring. For me it will be a very interesting and important fight because the winner will receive a fight against WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. For me, that is my number one goal. I am ready to fight with the best fighters and to win.”

Rogan Defeats Harrison

Last Saturday night the rugged Martin Rogan (12-0, 6 KOs) beat the former Olympic champion Audley Harrison (now 23-4, 17 KOs) at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England.

Rogan came to light when he was a Prizefighter tournament by defeating 3 people in 1 evening to claim a £25,000 prize. Since then he has held wins over former world title challenger Matt Skelton (22-3, 19 KOs) and now Audley Harrison. Look for him to make a jump in the rankings with these wins.
