Adamek and Bloodworth Talk Klitschko Fight

Ahead of his WBC title shot on September 10 in Wrocław, Poland, former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KOs) and his trainer Roger Bloodworth talk about his training camp and upcoming fight with WBC heavyweight champion Vitaly Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO).

How ready are you to work hard for the next 11-12 weeks?

Tomasz Adamek: Ready. I know what’s at stake. I’m joking that I already did so much work by myself that Tyler, my conditioning specialist and Roger have it too easy…

Roger Bloodworth: Tomek is always in shape. Always. First day of training he was around 220 pounds, so more than I want him to have against Vitali Klitschko. How many fighters can say that? Some people are assuming that it will be a very long training camp but I call it normal – 11, almost 12 weeks. Tomek was rested more than ever, although since his last fight was just two months. Rested mentally and physically. He is interested in all the boxing business, money and so on, but for him it’s really secondary, never overshadows the will to beat the other guy, to get the belt.

Until this year you fought more than any top-level heavyweight in decades, four times a year. Now it will be a more regular, two time affair – you fought against Kevin McBride in April and on September 10 you will have biggest fight of your life – at least as a heavyweight – versus Vitali Klitschko.

Tomasz Adamek: Roger was telling me from the beginning that I need heavyweight experience that my body needs to grow with the additional 20 pounds I’m carrying since my cruiserweight times. It was hard to fight every three months against guys taller and heavier than me by some inches and 30+ pounds but necessary.

Roger Bloodworth: It was what Tomek needed, this is what I believed in from the first day we start working together. Not only experience of fighting big guys, but a natural development of his body. Now he is ready, there’s no more time to wait. Vitali offered Tomek this fight in the best possible moment.

How do you stay focused for such a long time? Are there times when Roger, you manager Zyggi Rozalski or your wife Dorota has to encourage you to get from the bed and start training?

Tomasz Adamek: It never happens and it never will. People who don’t understand what awaits them in boxing ring should never box. I’m working for a goal, working for myself and taking training lightly will be like punching myself in the face for pleasure. In the end, not Roger, Zyggi or my wife Dorota has to go and fight. I do. For the next three weeks I will stay in New Jersey getting in best possible shape, then its Poconos Mountains again. I’m training six days a week – first five days twice a week, one on Saturday.

Roger Bloodworth: We have partnership – I told him the truth and he is telling me the truth, we are in constant two-way conversations. During a training camp you are trying to keep fighter sharp all the time. This is why I never plan ahead what we will do the next day – I see what’s going on, what their attention span is and I’m making a decision what to do next on the spot. It keeps Tomek from getting bored although it never happens with him. I think he genuinely likes to train, and sometimes I have to slow him down. It’s a perfect situation for a trainer, and as you well know from my past, without naming any names, fighters don’t always want to work hard. What I’m saying is that it’s not necessary to have a partnership with a fighter, you do your job as a trainer no matter what, but it helps so much. It’s not lip service, because sometimes trainers are saying stuff just to look good, and the truth is different. Not here.

Not many experts are giving you a chance against Vitali Klitschko but at the same time, they are saying that this is – next to the upcoming Wladimir Klitschko – David Haye bout – best possible fight to be made. Your opinion?

Tomasz Adamek: I know that I’m not a favorite. I never was. If you would look at predictions when I was a light heavyweight, then cruiserweight and heavyweight, people were predicting wrong many of many fights. It did not matter then, it’s not important now. I read somewhere that the best possible fight in the heavyweight division will happen when Haye will lose to Wladimir and I will be defeated by Vitali – two losers fighting each other. Why not two winners?

Roger Bloodworth: This is a job for a journalist – create interest. I’m saying that with all the respect to their job. Of course Tomek is not a favorite and of course I’m aware of the dangers of Adamek fighting Klitschko. I would be an idiot not knowing that. But it doesn’t matter – my role in this business is simple – prepare the fighter to win. Do everything that’s possible to give him the best possible chance. Tomek reads all this stuff, predictions going one way or another. I like it because all this ”you have no chance” builds him up – he’s a warrior. Lesser guys would crumble under pressure; he uses it as a fuel. And it puts all the pressure on Vitali, so I like it. Thank you and congratulations for not asking what Adamek’s tactics for Klitschko will be. September 10 in Wrocław will give all the answers to this question.

Sosnowski Interview Before Klitschko Fight

Albert Sosnowski was recently interviewed ahead of his WBC heavyweight championship fight with current champ Vitali Klitschk ahead of their title clash this Saturday, May 29th. Here's the actual transcript of the interview.

Do you feel the pressure connected with the fight at the moment?

Yes, the final countdown to the fight already started. The remaining day will surely go very fast. I'm rather calm by now but sometimes I have thoughts mobilizing me to intensified work. This is the fight of my life, I want to take the chance because such occasion may not happen again. Everything goes well by now. My training sessions go satisfactorily, especially sparring. Apart from that, I'm healthy, I didn't catch any injury which makes me really glad. There's anything which hampers my hard preparations. Additionally, we cooperate with a psychologist in order to be well mentally prepared. It will help me to maintain full concentration despite of the big pressure. We'll see. Let's hope that everything will be 110% completed. I hope that the top of my form will fall on May 29th which will allow me to perform excellently.

You know very well what to expect from the Klitschko: jabs, powerful left blows dealt from a distance. The whole world knows his style of boxing. What will you use so as to surprise him?

That's right. Vitali Klitschko is a magnificent fighter having his specific style of boxing. The style is unpredictable, he deals various kinds of punches. He has both left and right hand atomic. Everybody knows that his clean punch results in KO. How do I want to surprise him? Among others by my positive approach to the bout. I'll enter the ring in order to defeat him. I won't have the clash already lost before the first bell. It's not enough for me that I face the world champion Vitali Klitschko. The endurance to the final bell won't be enough to satisfy me. I want to show my character, the self-confidence and the belief in the final victory. The crucial issue will be my speed, aggressiveness, and determination which will make him a bit nervous and hamper him. Subsequently, I'll try to take a risk regardless of the fact that the possibility of my defeat by KO will be higher. I'll be definitely striving to surprise him somehow, to take a serious risk. Surely, I won't be focusing only on avoiding KO but I'll be fighting to win victory over him, I can promise. Will I be successful? It will be verified in the ring.

At first sight, the tactics to fight the Klitschko brothers may look very simple: to shorten the distance. However nobody has succeeded in doing it by now. Where's the key to push the way through his jabs?

As I said previously, the key element will be my mentality, my approach to the contest. The majority of boxers who came face-to-face with the Klitschko's had their bouts already lost in their warm-up rooms. Their dream already came true when they got the fight against one of the Klitschko brothers. The high salary they had been proposed fully compensated the probably poor performance in the ring. That was enough for them and obviously they were paralyzed in the ring later. Frankly speaking, I don't know how will it will look like in my case. However, I must have a proper speed, a tight defense, and good movement. Klitschko's not a machine, he also can have a bad day, or just disregard me. But we don't count on that. I expect Vitali perfectly prepared, showing his best. Thus, we work form this angle. If it will happen differently, it will be only advantageous for me. I'm concentrated on myself. If we compared his and my boxing skills, our experiences and all the remaining elements, it would turn out that my chances are only minimal or I'm deprived of chances completely. On the other hand, my self-confidence, a proper mental approach or simply a fluke, may cause that the whole bout looks differently. I
believe that if I only have one opportunity, I'll take such a chance in the championship bout. I don't want to promise so much, I don't need to make loud announcement, to speak high-flown words. However, I'm determined to achieve a big success. Everything shapes up very well in this way. I'm content with my cooperation with the head coach Fiodor Lapin. I'm satisfied with my attitude to the fight and my tactical plan. Our talks conclude that we believe in the success which motivates the whole team to the intensified work.

Your sparring partners were David Price and Evgeni Orlov. Price is the type of a fighter who can imitate Vitali Klitschko with his great left jab. How do your sparrrings look like?

Actually, David Price only just only became a (? maybe saying he was temporary..), he still has a quick left jab. He deals numerous blows which is characteristic for amateur boxers. Price transferred this style to the professional boxing. It's a pity he had to leave early in connection with his clash. I'm really content with two conducted sparring sessions. I was hitting him frequently, he also endeavoured to exert pressure. We asked him for imitating Klitschko for constant hunting with a straight right. I was defending myself very well. Additionally, I had one sparring with Evgeni Orlov, which I'm also glad about this training fight. Orlov, a bit taller than Klitschko, was very inconvenient, he has a powerful punch. I also managed to hit him numerously. His boxing style doesn't resemble Vitali's, but our aim was to exercise a few tactical elements. I'm also training with Mariusz Wach, because sparring will be prolonged. There is also a chance that Tyson Fury will visit me. All the sparring partners are very tall, we're still focusing on exercising a few tactical points we had planned. we want to prepare several types of actions to make them automatic for me. We planned 10-round and 12-round sparring. I want to check my physical ability. Apart from that, I'm grateful for the help of my sparring partners who strived to imitate Klitschko. It was so important for me.

What were the main points you put an emphasis on during your preparations? Was it improvement of your technique or rather conditional issues? It's known that Vitali is quite an old fighter and you have been always famous for your great endurance.

As far as my conditioning abilities, I showed them only in my last fights which was a bit unexpected. Previously, I had a reputation of a 6 round boxer. The majority of my bouts were scheduled for 6 rounds. The passing to longer contests was very beneficial for me. Last year I fought two 12 round bouts in a good pace, on a big level, and I'm happy about it. We work mainly on the tactical points and on my defense in order to avoid punches. We also focus on proper movement, not only backwards but also sideways. We derived it from the workshop of Tomasz Adamek who's trainers showed him that before the fight against Chris Arreola. The element will be really inconvenient for the rival as tall as Klitschko because it will be harder to hit me. The question of endurance will be also significant. Noticeable crises sometimes happen to Vitali. Such crises may happen again if the pace will be high, and obviously if he doesn't manage to hit me. I'll try to take my advantage then. Of course, it's easier to say than to perform. However, we prepare various options, we work on various elements in order to combine them. It looks great so far. I'm content with the whole work, and I'll try to show my best on May 29th!

Here's the actual interview on video.

Kevin Johnson Interview Ahead Of Klitschko Fight

Undefeated heavyweight contender Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson was recently interviewed on Blog Talk Radio and discussed his career and his upcoming fight with current WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. You can listen to the interview here and you can skip to the part with the Johnson interview by going to the 85:35 mark of the interview recording.

There's also an interview with Oleg Maskaev if you want to listen to that it's on there too.

Here's some of what was said in the interview with Johnson...

On training and preparations for his upcoming fight with Vitali Klitschko:
“Things couldn’t be any better. Perfect. Wonderful.”

On whether or not he feels he is ready for challenging Klitschko:
“Oh yeah, 100%.”

On fighting outside of the United States for the first time in his professional career:
“It’s making me work harder so I could go over there and clarify this win.”

On being able to get inside on someone as big as Vitali:
“Well that’s the thing about this fight. I don’t have to worry about getting inside for this fight right here, because I don’t have to go to him. I have the reach advantage. I can stand outside and box the hell out of him all day.”

On having a back-up plan in a fight:
“Plan B, C, D, E, F, and G—you’re always supposed to have fifteen backup plans just in case one don’t work, you need another and another and another.”

On implementing his game plan against Klitschko:
“There’s several things I can do to beat the guy. You can’t really say what you’re going to do until you step into the ring and hear that bell ring.”

On what he believes is the key to beating Vitali Klitschko on December 12:
“Not getting hit.”

On his lack of amateur experience:
“If you know me and you do your research on me, you would know I have the best amateur background that anyone else would dream to have.”

Regarding Manny Pacquiao’s impressive run:
“I love the guy, I love watching him. I know he’s always going to give me something. If I could meet the guy I would just like to ask him where does he sleep, in an oxygen chamber? The guy is energetic. I’ve never seen anybody as energetic as this guy.”

Arreola Interview Ahead Of Klitschko Fight

Chris Arreola was recently interviewed by James Slater ahead of his WBC heavyweight title shot with current WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitsckho on September 26th. This is what Chris had to say.

James Slater: It's a pleasure to speak with you, sir, as always. Just to start off, how has training been going so far? I know you've only been in camp for a week or so.

Chris Arreola: My pleasure. It's been going good, man. Darryl, my conditioning coach, has been putting me through it and my trainer, Henry, has also been kicking my butt in the gym, so it's all coming together.

J.S: Have you started sparring yet?

C.A: Oh, sure. I'm in my second week of sparring already.

J.S: And who have you been working with?

C.A: At the moment it's Cisse Salif, and we're going to get Lance Whitaker and then either Tye Fields or Michael Grant.

J.S: Obviously big guys with height then, to emulate Vitali?

C.A: Of course, yeah.

J.S: And you're out at San Fernando Valley now, right?

C.A: Yeah, I'm out in San Fernando and I love it here. It's really nice here - so much better than Big Bear. I hate Big Bear!

J.S: We all saw the press conference last week, when you and Viltali came face-to-face. Was that the first time you'd met him up close?

C.A: No. I met him when I'd had about three or four fights. I doubt he even remembers it, but it was back in LA when I was sparring with his brother.

J.S: When you sized him up last week, so to speak, did you have any initial thoughts, like he's taller or shorter than you thought he'd be?

C.A: He was actually a little smaller than I thought. You build up this image of him in your head, of him being like out of Rocky, you know, Ivan Drago. But he's not that big really. But regardless of that, I've still got to chop him down to my size in the ring.

J.S: A lot of fans liked how you and Vitali were both gentlemen at the press conference - you both showed each other a lot of respect. There's never any trash talk from you, is there?

C.A: Boxing is a gentleman's sport. Some people need to talk trash to get themselves mentally up for the fight. I don't need to do that. I knew Vitali would be a gentleman also. We talk business in the ring, that's all.

J.S: The fans are really buzzing about this fight, and are happy that the heavyweight division has a great fight to look forward to at last. Are you feeling any different in yourself? I mean, I know you're massively motivated, but do you feel anything else differently? Are there even any nerves?

C.A: No. I have no nerves at all. I am hugely motivated for the fight, but I'm not scared, I'm not intimidated. I'm happy about this fight. I'm looking forward to taking the bull by the horns. I won't pay any attention, really, when I enter the ring and all the lights and the cameras are on me. I'm happy to be getting the opportunity to put heavyweight boxing back on the map.

J.S: Ring magazine are excited about this fight. They said that Chris Arreola may not win, but he will give it everything he has trying. I know you don't want to hear about people saying you'll lose, but even Ring are pumped about this fight, does that make you feel good?

C.A: I think it's good that this fight has given people something to talk about. But, you know, I'm coming to win. I will win.

J.S: It's great that the fight got made, and seemingly so easily. We know what happened over here in the UK with David Haye Vs. Klitschko becoming a farce. Fans are glad that this fight is actually happening!

C.A: I'm here to fight. That's what it's all about and what we're [boxers] here for. People pay to see us fight, they pay to see action. They sit down with their popcorn or whatever and they want to be entertained. So I always want to fight, whoever it's against. I just fight, man.

J.S: Everyone talks about Vitali's long reach and his good left jab. Is that your main concern, his jab?

C.A: Yes, of course his jab is a concern, but his right hand in my main concern - the way he drops that hammer down. The jab sets up his right. So, of course, we have to take his left jab away from him, and that will leave him with nothing. I have to get inside.

J.S: As good as he is, Vitali is 38 and he has to go some time. Do you think it will be against you?

C.A: Well, nowadays, 38 is nothing really. Age doesn't really come into it today, look at Bernard Hopkins. So age is not a factor. He's [Vitali] still a warrior and I have to fight him like he's a young man.

J.S: Have you got your tactics firmly in your head? Do you have a mental picture of how you see yourself fighting against Vitali?

C.A: Yeah, I know I have to get inside. That's most important. And I've got to apply pressure, constant pressure. I have to hit his arms, his chest, his head, his belly - I have to just make sure I hit him everywhere I can. I have to make it my fight. And of course, I have to try some new things, like head movement, side steps and angles.

J.S: Most people are expecting a great action fight. Do you expect a really brutal fight? A war?

C.A: I'm hoping it will be. I really am. I want an all out war. I hope this fight is a classic, plain and simple.

J.S: Well, it's been great speaking with you once again, Chris. I really wish you all the best for September, and hopefully the next time I speak with you you will be the heavyweight champion of the world!

C.A: Thank you. I'm always happy to do interviews.

Chagaev Interview Ahead of Klitschko Fight

Ahead of his heavyweight championship fight this Saturday with current WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, WBA "champion in recess" Ruslan Chagaev was interviewed by RTL...

Ruslan, what does it mean for you to fight against triple champion Wladimir Klitschko so soon after the cancellation of the Valuev fight?

“The cancellation of the fight against Nikolai Valuev for me was a real shock. I was really broken up in Helsinki, it was a difficult time for me. But thank God, Wladimir Klitschko suddenly wanted to fight against me. That’s real luck for me. A chance like this comes only once in a lifetime.”

How do you feel about the the assertion that you are ill?

“I know I’m healthy and I don’t understand the Sauerland politics. But, now everything is good. “

How long did it take you to accept the offer from the Klitschko management?

“Actually, after the cancellation in Helsinki I wanted to take a holiday with my family and had already bought the tickets. The day before departure, I called my coach and told him that I’m flying out on holiday and he said okay. A half hour later he called back and said ‘Ruslan, I am sorry, but you must now fight against Wladimir Klitschko.’ I immediately and without hesitation agreed to it because this is a dream for me. And my family will arrive here on Friday. ”

How important is your family?

“My family is number one in my life. My wife is a real help for me. If I’m tired, she knows and she can motivate me. And my children Artur and Alan are my treasure and my great love. ”

Did you ever think about ending your career due to your Achilles tendon injury?

“You know, that was a very difficult time. The last two years were not normal. Again and again there were setbacks. But life has its ups and downs, and now it’s an ‘up,’ thank God.”

Is the short preparation for this fight difficult?

“No, because I had prepared so intensively for the fight against Valuev beforehand. After the cancellation, I had to forget about everything. Get rid of all the bad thoughts and think positive. I didn’t change my training plan. Nikolai is big and heavy, and is a righthander, as is Wladimir. So for me it’s not a big difference and therefore no problem for me. After the cancellation, I had a few days break, then came the offer and since then I’ve been on full throttle. Wladimir might be the world’s best boxer, he has two belts, but I have more motivation because I want to have three belts.”

Have you identified any weaknesses in Wladimir Klitschko?

“This we’ll see in the ring. Of course, there are advantages to being a big boxer, but it’s also a handicap. I am smaller, but I’m venomous. So he will have to make adjustments also.“

How are you going to approach the fight against Wladimir?

“Of course I have a few tactics, but they are top secret. 50% will be decided in the head, 50% by the body. ”

Do you think it’ll go twelve rounds?

“I’m prepared to go 12 rounds. But only God knows what will happen. ”

How do you deal with the idea of fighting in front of 60,000 spectators?

“It’s okay, I think it is not a problem for me to box before so many spectators. I think this will motivate me.”

What do you really think about Wladimir Klitschko?

“He is a good, friendly man and a good boxer. The ring is just business. “
