Wladimir & Vitali Share Plans For Their Future

On Wednesday January 28th, 2009, Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko held a press conference in Kiev, Ukraine and discussed their future plans. Vitali confirmed that he will face the WBC #1 mandatory Juan Carlos Gomez on March 21st, and Wladimir said that he will most likely face David Haye June 20th in London at the Stamford Bridge stadium in Chelsea, but if negotiations break down he may still face Chris Arreola from the United States on May 16th in Los Angeles, CA.

Vitali Klitschko Quotes

*In regards to facing Gomez:

“For me it is very important and also bears an unusual component. The matter is that the daughter of my trainer Fritz Sdunek was married to Juan Carlos Gomez, and now his promoter is in a relationship with his daughter. But for me it’s not a problem, as we are professionals. I know Gomez well. We boxed together at Universum. But I am sure of a victory and I will do everything to knock him out. Then I wish to fight against WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev so that we have the four championship titles. We’ll make it!"

Wladimir Klitschko Quotes

*In regards to David Haye:

“He has a very big mouth, but I will make him say less, then he won’t claim that he’s better than me. Many who get into the ring with me say that they’ll knock me out, but the end result is they lose.”

*In regards to facing Chris Arreola:

“The contract on the fight with David Haye is not signed yet. If the fight with Haye breaks down, the next opponent will be Chris Arreola."

AAPRP Recommends Postponent For Morrison Fight

The (AAPRP) American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians wants the fight contest between Tommy Morrison and Corey Williams scheduled for this Saturday January the 31st at the Albany Fair Grounds, Laramie, Wyoming, to be postponed. A statement from the AAPRP says:

“As referenced in multiple reports over the past twelve years, Mr. Morrison has not been able to document negative HIV status thereby not meeting the minimum medical requirements to insure the safety and protection of himself, his opponent or ring officials. As such, the AAPRP is concerned about the potential of transmission of infectious diseases should bleeding occur. Currently, the State of Wyoming does not have a boxing commission. Thus, we recommend that this fight be canceled until such time as an appropriate supervisory commission is appointed to oversee the medical aspects of this contest and blood test are performed by an AAPRP approved physician to document the health status of each competitor. Should this contest take place without proper regulatory oversight and experienced medical personnel, we believe there is a possibility that the health and safety of the competitors and ring officials may be compromised; an unnecessary risk which should not be permitted.”

WBA “Champion in Recess" Ruslan Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KOs) had a few words about his future in the heavyweight division ahead of his Febrary 7th bout against Carl Davis Drummond(26-0, 20 KOs).

“[After defeating Drumond], I will show who the real champ is by beating Valuev for the second time. Then I want to unify all of the belts. I want to fight the Klitschkos. I respect them for what they’ve reached in the heavyweight division, but I know them very well and I can beat them. 2009 will be my year.”

"It’s been one year since my last fight (win by 12-round decision against 21-1 Matt Skelton), so I am very motivated for this fight. From now on I want to have fight after fight; I can’t wait for the next tasks. First, I will beat Drumond. He is a strong man and I must be careful. But he wants to knock me out? That’s a joke, isn’t it? Nobody can knock me out. Sorry, Carl. This fight will be a big surprise for you.”

Valuev vs. Holyfield Under Review

According to the WBA Executive Vice-President Gilberto Mendoza Jr, the WBA will review the fight between Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield, and Nicolai Valuev due to a challenge made by Holyfield that he had won the fight. Many fans believe that he deserved the win as well. This is what Mendoza Jr. had to say:

“We are going to review all that happened to see if irregularities in the fight did happen. All our fights are important and we give a lot of attention to each one and this will not be the exception independently on the claims on the part of Holyfield. It is the duty of the WBA to review thoroughly the video of this fight and any situation out of the ring. Nightmare Wants Fight With Other Nightmare

Former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter has recently expresses his desire to face the other "Nightmare" Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola. Peter feels that Arreola is using his name to build his career, and wishes to fight him with the winner getting rid of the nickname "Nightmare". Here's what Peter had to say:

“To Chris Arreola, I want to say that there is only one true Nightmare in the heavyweight division and that’s me, Samuel Peter “The Nigerian Nightmare!”

“He says he’s the top contender, but he hasn’t done anything to prove that. He has to fight a top contender before he can claim he’s the best. I’ll show him and the fans how determined I am to win back my belt. And at the same time, I’ll prove who the real Nightmare is in boxing.”

Klitschko Brothers - Their Year- 2008

2008 was a very successful year for the Klitschko brothers Wladimi & Vitali. The year started out in February 23rd with Wladimir capturing the IBF strap to add to his IBO and WBO belts against former IBF heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov. Wladimir won via a 12 round unanimous decision at the Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York.

Then, on July 12th he successfully defended his belts by defeated WBO #1 mandatory contender Tony "The Tiger" Thompson, who previously had beaten Luan Krasniqi, via 11th round spectacular KO.

On October 11th, Wladimir's brother Vitali made an amazing comeback by fighting current WBC heavyweight champ Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. He easily handled Peter with his jab and ring generalship until Peter quit on his stool after the 8th round.

With Vitali's win, Wladimir & Vitali Klitschko became the 1st brothers in history to hold simultaneous belts at heavyweight. This itself was the most amazing accomplishment for the year, not just because of the record books, but because this had been such a long awaited dream for the 2 brothers. They came very close to getting their wish back in April 2004, but 4 and a half years later got it anyway.

Finally, on December 13th, as a late replacement to the injured #1 IBF mandatory Alexander Povetkin, Wladimir Klitschko defended his belts against former 2 time heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman. The fight was a no contest from the start with Wladimir easily handling Rahman with his jab, and Rahman finding no answer or plan to get inside. Wladimir had him out by 44 second mark in round 7 for a TKO win.

With these wins Wladimir Klitschko record now stands --> won 52 (KO 46) + lost 3 (KO 3) + drawn 0 = 55 while his brother Vitali stands --> won 36 (KO 35) + lost 2 (KO 2) + drawn 0 = 38.

Congratulations to the Klitschko's on an amazing year in boxing, and we all look forward to another one in 2009. Future potential fights for Vitali include the WBC #1 mandatory Juan Carlos Gomez, and the very vocal former cruiserweight champion turned heavyweight David "Hayemaker" Haye, while Wladimir has potential battles with top ranked undefeated American heavyweight Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola, and IBF #1 mandatory Alexander Povetkin.
